287 Change of situation or address of registered office
The 287 form is supplied by Companies House for companies wishing to change details of the registered office.
The registered office is the company’s address to which formal communications are sent. It does not have to be where the company is actually trading. It may be the director’s home address, the accountants address or the business address, but it has to be a real address and not just a PO Box number.
All Companies House letters and reminders will be sent to the registered office. Thus any change of a company’s registered office address must be notified to Companies House on a 287 form. Forms can be requested by post or can be downloaded in PDF format.
The 287 form can be sent to Companies House in a variety of ways including being filed electronically using Companies House online WebFiling and Electronic Filing services. The Webfiling and Electronic Filing services have security protection by using passwords, confidential authentication codes and recognised e-mail addresses. This helps prevent against fraudulent activity so companies can protect themselves from being exploited. This is particularly applicable to the 287 form, as criminals have been known to falsify the details of the registered office address, and using the false details order goods on credit, sell them on and never pay for the products.
Once Companies House receives the change in the situation of the registered office, it does not take effect until the Registrar at Companies House has registered the notice.
